What are Cranberries?
The cranberry is native to the northeastern North American swamps and bogs. Primarily grown in temperate climates, the plant grows from the East Coast to the Central U.S. and Canada to the southern Appalachians. The cranberry plant is a low-growing, trailing, woody vine that can grow to be one to six feet long. The berry itself is known for its deep red color and bitter, zesty taste!
Cranberries have been enjoyed as culinary delights for thousands of years. In southeastern Massachusetts, the Wampanoag People would make a dish called nasampe which was a mix of berries, dried meat and animal fat. In later times, the fascination of the berries grew and they began to be cultivated in 1816 by Captain Henry Hall who developed a method to better produce greater quantities of the cranberries. Today, many associate cranberries with yummy cranberry cocktails and holiday festivities!
