Yarrow is a bushy plant that features fern-like leaves dotted with small white, pink, or purple flowers. Often found in hedgerows, it is notably hardy and reaches a height of about 3 feet. Growing abundantly throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, yarrow has a centuries-old history of use in folk wellness practices. Remnants of Yarrow plants have even been found in Neanderthal burial grounds, suggesting an even longer relationship between humans and this historically significant plant!

History of Yarrow

Yarrow's scientific “Achilea” name refers to Achilles from Greek mythology. When wounded at his vulnerable heel, legend has it that Achilles applied yarrow. Throughout the rest of his life, Achilles was said to use yarrow’s wellness powers. Intriguingly, yarrow's properties have been recognized by other cultures all around the world, including the Celts, Native Americans, Druids, Anglo-Saxons, Germanic tribes, and even practitioners of ancient Chinese traditions. Even the word yarrow means "make healthy" in ancient Anglo-Saxon tongues! Yarrow’s benefits ventures into the mystical, as well; it was a key component of pagan spells and was frequently used to ward off evil.

8-10 drops of essential oil per 1 ounce of carrier oil. Apply a small amount directly to areas of concern, such as muscles, skin, or joints. Work the oil gently into the skin until it is fully absorbed.

Inhalation

Inhale the aromatic vapors directly from the bottle, or place a few drops in a burner or diffuser to fill a room with its scent.
