What is Moringa?
A tree of many names, Moringa is also known as the horseradish tree (thanks to the taste of its roots), the drumstick tree (thanks to the shape of its pods), and the Tree of Life (thanks to its value as a food crop). Moringa oleifera is a drought-resistant deciduous tree reaching a height of 40 feet tall and native to the foothills of the Himalayas. It has a whitish-grey bark and an open crown of drooping branches with feathery foliage. Its white flowers are lovely and fragrant, and its fruit are pods that contain dark brown, globular seeds.
Moringa is naturally rich in phytonutrients, and has long been used for its bark, fruit, leaves, and seeds. The leaves and pods are widely used in the tropics and subtropics as vegetables. The leftover seeds that have been pressed for their oil are compressed into cakes that are used for water purification, filtering water to make it safe for both human and animal consumption!
